The Margaret River region spans from Busselton to Augusta; that's about 100 kilometres of ground, and even more coastline, to discover. Get your feet dirty, your hair wet and your body tired as you explore by car, bike and foot.

Holidays can be expensive but thankfully, our backyard to full of outdoor activities that don't cost the earth. Here are seven free or inexpensive outdoor things to do while on holiday in Busselton.

Look for possums in the peppi trees

The ringtail possum is an endangered marsupial that lives in the peppermint trees around the Margaret River region. The small, nocturnal creatures come out at dusk and they're easy to spot with a good eye and a torch. The ringtail possum has a white tail. The brushtail possum has a bushy tail and is a little bigger.

Cost: DIY spotting is free. Local conservation groups, GeoCatch and Nature Conservation occasionally offer free evening possum-spotting tours. Check their websites for more information.

Make a splash at the beach

Going to the beach has to be one of the all-time best and favourite free outdoor activities in the world. And thankfully, the Margaret River region is blessed with beautiful beaches; so many it will be hard to choose which ones to visit. The beaches of Yallingup, Prevelly, Gracetown and Wilyabrup are surfers' paradise while the sandy shores of Dunsborough and Busselton are better for families. Staying at Beachlands you have a beautiful, calm beach just 150 metres from the holiday park. It's dog-friendly too.

Cost: the sea is absolutely free

Enjoy a scenic meal at the foreshore

The foreshores of Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup are perfect for long lunches and sunset suppers. Both seaside parklands are dotted with gas barbecues that are easy to operate, even for the most timid outdoor cook. We have free gas barbecues at Beachlands, but there's something exciting about dining by the sea. Head to the playground and barbecue area this side of Equinox Cafe where you can grill your sausages with a sea view. There are also tables to eat at or bring a blanket and have a picnic style meal on the wide open grassed areas. Afterwards, take a stroll along the beach or let the kids play at the playground.

Cost: just the price of the food you bring

Explore Boranup Forest

Get lost in the Boranup Forest

Lose yourself in nature with a drive and/or walk through the forests of Boranup. Driving the dirt Boranup Road through tall karri trees is peaceful and relaxing, you may never want to leave. Definitely stop at the look-out for stunning views that feature the karri-filled forests and the beautiful Indian Ocean.

Cost: nothing

Take photos, leave footprints at Yallingup Beach

When you drive along Yallingup Beach Road, you'll be rewarded with awe-inspiring coastal views as you round the bend and enter the small surfing village of Yallingup. It's a scene you'll want to capture on film (most likely some digital device) from the look-outs and sea level. Watch the surfers, walk the beach, take a swim and snap photos, lots of photos.

Cost: 100% free
